Abstract
872,015. Siphon-discharge water-waste-preventers ; tank inlet fittings. SEARL, W. H. Dec. 9, 1959 [Dec. 11, 1958], No. 40038/58. Class 26. Flushing apparatus comprises a cistern 1, accommodating a float 17 and a vertical movable tube 8, normally occupying a raised position and depressable axially by manuallyoperable means 23 together with the float 17 to effect a flush, enclosed by a bell 13 open at its base, and having an inlet at its upper end above the level of the watery its lower end being guided in an open tube 9 carried by the base of the cistern, the tube 8 being formed below or predominantly below the normal water level with a restriction in diameter 20 to initiate flushing on depression, through the top of the tube 8, which carries as an upward extension a valve member 6 normally seating within an inlet port of the water supply pipe 3 normally to close it, Fig. 1. The cistern 1 has a lid 2, a valve body 4 depending from the pipe 3 and having a truncated conical recess 4c for the valve member 6, spring means yieldingly opposing the depression of the tube 8, which with the bell 13 forms a space leading to the cistern at the bottom thereof, of decreasing cross-section upwards. A truncated hollow conical rubber seating 5 may be fitted in the inlet recess 4c which the valve member 6 normally closes through the buoyant action of the water on the float. The spring means may comprise a helical spring around the tube 8 and within a sleeve 19 between a flange 8b on the tube 8 and a plate 10 on the cistern base integral with a boss 10a threaded on the outlet tube 9. The bell 13 has spaced depending feet to allow ingress of water and has a guide 14 for a rod 7. Upstanding from the tube 8, provided with sealing means, and attached to the valve member 6, arms 15 radiating from the rod 7 and bent downwardly as at 15a to carry the float 17. Between the valve seating and the water inlet overflow-preventing means may be included which when flushing is completed forms a seal against further ingress of water into the cistern until the float is returned upwards (after initial spring action) to a position slightly in advance of that it would occupy when the valve is closed. Said means includes a valve body 4 which is modified to be threaded on to a boss extending from the supply pipe 3.
