Abstract
871,689. Tampons. TAMPAX Inc. June 5, 1959 [June 6, 1958], No. 19341/59. Class 81 (2). A catamenial tampon comprises a cylindrical compressed mass of absorbent fibres, a moisture resistant barrier 42 at or over that end which is outermost in use and a withdrawal cord 13. The tampon is made from a cotton bat 40 at the outer end of which is wrapped a sheet 42 of moisture resistant fabric, paper or synthetic plastic. The sheet is secured to the bat by stitches 41 the threads of which also form the withdrawal cord 13. The sheet may be hidden by a thin sheet 50 of the material of the bat. The bat and the positioned moisture-resistant sheet 42 are formed into a cylindrical tampon with a moisture-resistant cup at one end by a conventional compressing operation. The moisture resistant barrier, alternatively, may be formed by spraying or dipping the outer end of the tampon or the uncompressed bat with moisture resistant material e.g. alcohol-ether solution of cellulose nitrate, ethyl cellulose or vinyl resins in chlorinated hydrocarbons, aqueous emulsions of silicones. The sheet 45 may be gauze which is rendered moisture resistant by one of these materials before or after application to the bat.
