Abstract
871,570. Respiratory appliances. CAPE ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 19, 1960 [April 22, 1959], No. 13654/59. Class 81(2). An iron lung has the body-receiving compartment 10 mounted on longitudinal pivots 36, 23 so that the patient can be turned over without opening the compartment. The pivots are carried in aligned bearings 37, 34 on a frame 26 and the latter is itself pivoted on trunnions 27 and adjustable by a jack 31 actuated by a handle 33. Rotation of the compartment 10 is achieved by a worm, driven by a handle 35, and the pivot 36 is made hollow so as to be used as the air inlet, so that no interference with the air supply is caused by rotating the compartment. The lid is pivoted at 14 and counterbalanced by a spring device 16 and the couch 38 may have its inclination, about a pivot 39, adjusted by a screw 41. In order to facilitate reaching the patient's back for massage or other treatment, a door 48, in the base of the compartment, is aligned with a removable section 43a of the mattress.
