Abstract
Adipic acid is recovered from the crude aqueous extract obtained from the cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone-containing reaction products of the oxidation of cyclohexanone with oxygen, by extracting the aqueous entract with methylene chloride to form an aqueous layer and a methylene chloride layer containing impurities, separating and recovering the adipic acid from the aqueous layer. The extraction is carried out with stirring at 35-40 DEG C. or in a multi-stage extractor with a preferred ratio of water to methylene chloride of between 2 and 5 to 1 by volume. The adipic acid is recovered by evaporation and crystallisation. Specification 806,660 is referred to.
