Abstract
869,818. Fishing rods. RODRILL CO. Ltd. March 24, 1960 [April 13, 1959], No. 12422/59. Class 48. A device for securing the footplate of a reel to the cork or rubber handle of a fishing rod comprises a metal or plastic sleeve C having two metal or plastic locating rings C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP>, at least one of which is slidable along the sleeve C, and a metal, or plastic clamping-ring D slidable on the sleeve C and having an internal circumferential groove D<SP>1</SP> of varying depth into which projects a roller E or ball disposed in a longitudinal external groove C<SP>5</SP> in the sleeve C. In the embodiment shown the locating-ring C<SP>1</SP> is fixed to the sleeve C and the other sleeve C<SP>2</SP> is slidable thereon. The ends of the reel footplate are engaged under lips C<SP>3</SP>, C<SP>4</SP> on the locating rings C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> and the clamping ring D is clamped to the sleeve C in abutment with the slidable locating ring C<SP>2</SP> by rotating the ring D so that the roller E becomes wedged in one of the shallow end portions of the internal groove D<SP>1</SP>. If both locating rings are slidable either a stop formed by deforming the sleeve behind one of the locating rings or two clamping rings are provided and the longitudinal groove C<SP>5</SP> extends along the whole length of the sleeve. One of the slidable locating rings may be keyed against rotation on the sleeve. The longitudinal groove C<SP>5</SP> may extend at a small angle to the axis of the sleeve so that the rotational movement of the clamping ring D produces a small axial movement thereof to tighten the engagement of the locating rings on the footplate. The clamping of the footplate to the sleeve may also cause the sleeve to be pressed tightly against the cork handle. In a modification the sleeve C has a slot allowing the footplate to seat on the cork handle and the sleeve is slidable thereon. The longitudinal external groove C<SP>5</SP> is formed, as by stamping, to constitute an internal rib which co-operates with a longitudinal groove in the cork handle to prevent rotation of the sleeve. In a further modification the ball or roller is carried in an axial internal groove in the clamping-ring and co-operates with a groove of variable depth around the sleeve.
