Abstract

868,543. Regulating fluid flow; valves. GRIDLEY, S. W. Jan. 29, 1959 [Oct. 30, 1957], No.30566/57. Class 135. [Also in Group X] A ventilation grille comprises a plate 10 provided with twenty-four regularly-spaced orifices 11, the edges of which are belled outwards as shown, and an assembly of twenty-four flow control bodies 13 mounted on a grid 14. The grid has secured to it a cross-member 16 having a threaded central hole through which passes an adjusting-screw 17 for moving the grid towards and away from the plate 10 to regulate the flow through the ventilator. The flow control bodies may consist of rubber balls. In another embodiment the flow control bodies are impaled on rods secured to the grid and are held in position by friction so that they can be individually adjusted. In this embodiment the grid may be fixed or alternately may be adjustable in addition to the individual adjustment of each flow control body. The orifice plate 10 is reversible so that the device can be adapted to suit flow in either direction. Other streamlined bodies may be substituted for the balls shown. The invention may also be applied as a throttling device within a duct. Where a predetermined degree of throttling or flow control is required the provision for adjustment is omitted.
