Abstract

Class 40(3) In a polarimeter the extinction angle is determined as the mean of two angular settings at which the brightness is equal to a standard. A beam splitter 3, Fig. 1, directs about one-fifth of a beam 4 via path 6 to a photo-cell 9, the remainder passing through the polarimeter 1, 2, to a photo-cell 8. When the light intensity falling on the two cells is the same an electrometer 10 in a bridge circuit, Fig. 3, indicates zero. Coarse setting of the zero of the electrometer is effected by resistor 22 and fine adjustment by resistors 23, 24. Sensitivity is controlled by the circuit comprising battery 25 and resistors 26, 27 and the photo-cell dark current is compensated by the circuit comprising battery 15 and resistors 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20. The electrometer needle may be earthed through resistor 28. In one modification the two beams may be alternately directed on to one photo-cell and the output adjusted to be steady and in another, Fig. 4 (not shown) photo-conductive and photovoltaic cells are used. The beam splitter and photo-cells may be arranged in units for attachment to a standard polarimeter.
