868,185. Immobilizing hip joints. AXER, A. Dec. 18, 1959, No. 43163/59. Class 81 (2). An appliance for use in the immobilization of a hip joint comprises a three-flanged nail 1 with a collar (not shown) at its leading end to receive a clamping plate 7 and with its trailing end tapped to receive a threaded stud 9, an anchor plate 15 slidingly but not rotatably mounted on the stud 9 and pivotable relative to it and clamping means on the stud to immobilize the anchor-plate when the appliance is in position. The anchor plate 15 is slightly curved to correspond to the surface of the femur 2, has an aperture (not shown) through which the stud projects, and is pivotable relative to the stud by means of a ring 11 slid on to the stud which has laterally extending pins 13 on which lugs 14, integral with the plate 15 pivot. The clamping plate 7 comprises a sleeve 21, Fig. 3, which has a slot 22 which receives the collar on the nail 1 and into which a slide 23, Fig. 4, is inserted until the collar snaps into an aperture 28. When the nail 1, stud 9, clamping plate 7 and anchorplate 15 have been assembled in the hip joint, the plate 15 is tightened against the femur 2 by a nut 17 which is partially covered by a non- rotatable collar 18, a second nut 20 pressing the collar against the nut 17.
