A heater for the oil sump of a water-cooled internal combustion engine comprises a flanged hollow metal cylinder 1, e.g. of copper, secured in the sump by, for example, welding or bolting, an electric heating element 3 located inside the cylinder, and entry and exit tubes 7 and 6 whereby water from the cooling system of the engine can be led into and out of the cylinder. A thermostat 8 may be provided on the exit tube.
