A phonographic device for answering and recording incoming calls comprises a first recording and reproducing means for transmitting pre-recorded messages at the beginning and the end of an incoming call, a second recording and reproducing means for recording a message from the calling party, and control means responsive to the cessation of incoming speech impulses for rendering the second recording and reproducing means inoperative, starting the first recording and reproducing means to transmit the pre-recorded closing-down message, and disconnecting the device from the line at the end of this message. The recording and reproducing means comprise two magnetic tapes driven by a common motor by means of an electromagnetically - operable clutch. The control means consists of a valve timing circuit, which is reset to zero by an incoming speech impulse, and, after a predetermined break in such impulses, operates a relay to effect the necessary circuit changes. If, while an incoming message is being recorded, the recording tape becomes exhausted, the closing-down message is sent and the device is disconnected from the line. If less than a predetermined amount of tape is left when an incoming call is received, the device does not answer. Low-level incoming signals, such as cross-talk, are not recorded.
