Abstract

A flat or tubular fabric digestible in the human body, for use as a substitute for fascia lata and ribbon gut in surgery, is woven or knitted from catgut or collagen, which is wetted before or after fabrication so that the threads cohere when the fabric dries. The threads may be made by extruding a collagen gel, or by soaking a strip of catgut in sodium carbonate, whereupon it curls towards its centre line. Fabrics superimposed whilst wet adhere together on drying to form a laminated structure.
