Abstract

851,310. Scintillation detectors. COLE Ltd., E. K., and EVANS, J. N. I. March 23, 1959 [March 21, 1958], No. 9040/58. Class 40(3). For energy resolution of gamma radiation, x-rays &c., a scintillation crystal 1 is of spherical or spheroidal form and is surrounded by a lightreflecting medium 6 such as magnesium oxide or aluminium powder, housed in a metal container 5. The crystal 1 rests on a concave depression in a glass plate 2 which rests on the face of a photomultiplier tube 4 having a cathode 3. The joints between elements 1, 2 and 4 include a film of silicone oil. The crystal may have a flat face contacting the plate 2, Fig. 3 (not shown) or directly contacting the tube 4, Fig. 2 (not shown).
