Abstract

848,234. Folding paper. KEMP APPLICATIONS Ltd. Sept. 12, 1958 [Sept. 20, 1957], No. 29666/57. Class 100(1) A folding machine comprises means for feeding single sheets of paper to a folding mechanism which makes an initial fold in each sheet with a sharp crease extending along most of the length of the fold and the remainder of the fold at one end of the sheet being increased, and a conveyer which moves the sheet from the folding mechanism past a guide which folds the two ends of the sheet towards each other along folds at right angles to the initial fold with the result that one end of the sheet, where the initial fold is creased, is brought adjacent to the other end of the sheet where the initial fold is increased and the one end of the sheet is inserted between the parts of the sheet at its other end. The pile of sheets rests on an inclined tray 9 and a roller 11 separates single sheets from the pile and feeds them between rollers 13, 14 of a buckle plate folding device. The front end of the sheet slides up a plate 16 until it encounters an adjustable stop 17 thereon and thus causes the sheet to. be buckled into the nip of the roller 14 and another roller 15 which extends from one end of the roller 14 to a position short of the other end. The transverse fold produced in the sheet is therefore sharply creased only along a length corresponding to the length of the roller 15, a portion thereof at one end remaining uncreased. After passing between the rollers 14, 15 the folded sheet falls on to an endless conveyer 18 which carries it to the right as shown in Fig. 2, the sheet lying slightly askew on the conveyer owing to the action of a deflector 59 fixed' to the plate 16 and which engages the creased end of the folded sheet as it passes on to the conveyer. The ends of the sheet overlie metal strips 53, 54 fixed to a table portion 3 of the machine while the middle of the sheet is pressed down on to the conveyer by a series of rubber rollers 55 carried in a casing 56. The strips 53, 54 incline upwards so that as the sheet is advanced by the conveyer the ends thereof are bent up vertically round the sides of the casing 56. The creased bent-up end then passes between guide plates 62, 63 which fold it over inwards towards the centre-line of the conveyer. Simultaneously the increased end is also folded inwards by the inclined edge 64 of a guide plate 65. As the ends are folded inwards the creased end engages between the two sides of the folded sheet at its increased end, Fig. 9. The sheet is then pressed flat beneath inclined strips 66, 67, 68 and all the folds are sharply creased as it passes beneath a roller 24 which co-operates with a roller 20 that supports one end of the conveyer 18. The folded sheets are finally delivered on to a second conveyer 25 which stacks them against an inclined plate 33. The separator and buckle folding rollers and the conveyers are driven from an electric motor 34.
