Abstract

845,833. Bearings. THEW SHOVEL CO. Nov. 5, 1958 [Feb. 13, 1958], No. 35572/58. Class 12 (1). In a cage or spacer for a ball-bearing having balls 5 and inner and outer tracks 4, 3, which permits the crowding together of the balls as they come into the load area and a subsequent separation as they emerge, the spacer 6 comprises a metallic tubular cylinder 12 housing a pair of resiliently-deformable components 14 formed with axially-extending annular ribs 16 that abut each other at the middle of the cylinder 12 at which point they become substantially inflexible in the axial direction. Adjacent the abutment of the ribs they are recessed so as to form an annular cavity 25 between them; hence they become resiliently deformable in an axial direction. The components 14 have annular ball seatings at both the resilient and inflexible extremities 20, 21, those on the flexible portions being permanently in contact with the balls 5. The other seatings acting as a permanent stop to contact the balls when the ribs 16 meet, thus preventing adjacent balls from rubbing. In a modification the ball seatings are not separate but are formed as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the radius of the seatings being such that only the surface of the resilient portion initially contacts the balls. The spaces 25, Figs. 3 and 4, and 35, Figs. 5 and 6, between the resilient ribs are packed with lubricating grease and under the crowding action of the balls these spaces are reduced in volume and pump grease via channels 13, 24, 33 to the bearing-surfaces.
