Abstract
843,186. Swaging. APPEL PROCESS Ltd. Nov. 30, 1956 [Dec. 12, 1956], No. 36656/56. Class 83 (4). In a method of swaging an elongated workpiece W by radially acting swaging dies 6, the leading end of the workpiece as it emerges from the dies is engaged by means of a longitudinally movable support 10 which maintains the leading end coaxial with the dies. The latter may form part of the cold swaging machine described in Specification 797,518. The workpiece W is gripped in a slowly rotating chuck 5 carried by a head 4 movable along guide rods 3 for feeding the workpiece through the dies. A mandrel 7 is used with tubular workpieces. The support 10 comprises a piston having a socket 14 for receiving the leading end of the workpiece and working within a cylinder 11 rotatably mounted on bearings 16 within a liner 15 supported in a stationary sleeve 17. A coolant is circulated between the liner 15 and cylinder 11 through ports 21, 21<SP>1</SP>. In operation compressed air admitted through port 22 biases the piston 10 to the right to maintain pressure on the swaged workpiece and prevent bending thereof. Any stresses occurring are stated to be eliminated by the swaging hammers. Upon retraction of the chuck 5 and workpiece W, the piston 10 moves to abut against the right-hand end of the cylinder and air pressure then acting on a plug 23, 24 of the piston moves the latter to eject the workpiece from the socket 14.
