Abstract

843,021. Thrust bearings. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Aug. 28, 1958 [Sept. 3, 1957], No. 27838/57. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] A thrust bearing for a shaft 10 having a shoulder 14, comprises a housing 11 recessed to take an annular thrust plate 13 around which the shoulder 14 bears. On the front face of the thrust plate are a series of circumferentially-spaced pads or steps 32 separated by radial grooves 30 and a circumferentiallyextending groove 28 around the peripheral edge of each pad. The groove 28 is joined with each of the adjacent radial grooves by a shallow circumferential channel 25 so as to form a complete annular groove of varying depth. Oil fed to the radial grooves by the holes 29 is thus carried by the annular groove to each radial groove, surplus oil being carried away by the metering passages 33. A helical labyrinth seal 16 is provided either on the shaft or the housing with the direction of the helix being such, in relation to the direction of rotation of the shaft, that oil tending to leak past the seal is forced back to the thrust bearing.
