Abstract

840,062. Removing bark from logs. NICHOLSON, T. W. Jan. 6, 1958, No. 506/58. Class 145. Logs are fed to a machine, particularly for removal of bark by means of a rotary barking ring 1, while carried on chains 2 or live rolls 60 against which they are pressed by pairs of hold-down means 3 engaging the logs on opposite sides of their vertical diametral plane to prevent rotation during feed. The barking ring is driven by a motor 16 and is adjustable vertically to suit the log diameter by a fluid cylinder 13. As shown in Fig. 2, the logs rest directly on motor-driven chains 2 provided on both the infeed and discharge sides of the barking ring together with infeed and discharge rolls 24 connected by chain drives to the feed chains at the outer ends of the latter. Hold-down rollers 3 are carried on levers 30 lowered and raised by fluid actuators 32 which may be controlled independently or in pairs. The rollers are ribbed and preferably tapered and the rib spaces are kept clear of bark debris by fingers 37. In a modification, Fig. 5, the logs rest on dogs 40 which are spaced along chains 4 and slide on wear tracks 44 on the machine frame in this version, the hold-down levers are pivoted centrally as at 50 in Fig. 7 and the rollers have a single peripheral groove. As shown in Fig. 7, the logs rest on V-shaped driven rollers 60 having radial ridges or annular ridges with notches at intervals. Plain idler rollers 6 are provided on the inlet and discharge sides and swinging arms 7 operated by fluid actuators 71 lifted the discharged logs on to ways 72. In Fig. 15, the hold-down rollers 3 are carried on arms 9 supported by wheeled carriages 90 which run in arcuate tracks 91 and are connected to fluid actuators 94.
