Abstract

A coating composition comprises a polymer of an olefin, cyclized natural rubber and an organic compound having a plurality of -N = C = X groups wherein X is O or S. Polymers specified are those derived from ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, butadiene, norbornylene, styrene, methylstyrene, styrene/isobutylene and unspecified dienes, trienes and mixtures. The -N = C = X compound may be a di-isocyanate or di-isothiocyanate of which many are specified (e.g. toluene and diphenylmethane di-isocyanates), a polyurethane with -N = C = X end groups and of M.W. from 200-10,000 (e.g. the product of di-isocyanate with polyethylene glycol, pentamethylene adipate or propylene oxide/ethylene oxide copolyether glycols), a polyurea derived from diisocyanate with water or a polyamide, or an isothiocyanic or isocyanic ester of castor oil or hexahydrocastor oil. Organic solvents (such as benzene, toluene, xylene, petroleum fractions, halogenated hydrocarbons, ethers and t-amines), water, and conventional additives (such as pigments, dyes, fillers, delusterants, binders and plasticizers) may also be present. The coatings may be applied to various specified films, e.g. regenerated cellulose, which have optionally been modified by an intermediate anchor coat (e.g. as in Specification 545,523) or by impregnation with a resin (e.g. as in Specifications 647,593 or 684,105). The products find application as bags and containers for use in packaging foods, cigarettes and hardware, and in the preparation of adhesive and sound tapes.
