Abstract

833,783. Valves. ELLIOTT Ltd., H. J. April 9, 1958 [April 12, 1957], No. 12063/57. Class 135. A stopcock, primarily for use in burettes and pipettes, comprises a tube 2 of flexible, resilient, material having a smooth internal surface, an obturating member such as a ball 3 jammed in the tube and making contact with an annular area of the inner wall thereof so that fluid cannot normally flow past said member, and a screw device for squeezing the tube across a diameter which passes through said area, the tube and said member being such that when the tube is squeezed as aforesaid, channels will be opened between the tube and said member on another diameter and will permit the passage of fluid past said member. As shown, the tube is housed in a body 1 carrying a hand screw 4, 5 for squeezing the tube and having holes 9 on a diameter at right angles to the screw to allow the tube to deform away from the ball 3, the opposite ends of the tube being connected to parts 7, 8 of a burette.
