Abstract

833,701. Electrolytic production of manganese dioxides. CARTOUCHERIE FRANCAISE S.A. Feb. 6, 1957 [Feb. 9, 1956], No. 4159/57. Class 41. In the production of manganese dioxide using a two-compartment cell having a porous partition 4 with continuous circulation of electrolyte from the anode compartment 3 via a saturated tank 10 to the cathode compartment 2, the electrolyte consists of manganese sulphate, sulphuric acid, and an oxido-reducer material which is at least partially reduced by contact with the cathode 7 and is re-oxidized by pyrolusite, and pyrolusite is added to the electrolyte in the saturation tank. Typically the oxido-reducer material is a mixture of ferrous and ferric sulphates and the pyrolusite 11 is added in the tank 10 at such a rate that the said material is re-oxidized to its maximum extent. A stirrer 13 is provided in the tank 10 and the pump 14 returns the treated electrolyte via a filter 16 to the anode compartment. The anode 5 and cathode 7 may be of lead, silver-lead alloy, or graphite. French Specification 1,112,567 is referred to.
