828,221. Inserting lintels in walls; underpinning buildings. LOWTON CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. Oct. 9, 1957 [Oct. 10, 1956], No. 30830/56. Classes 20(2) and 20(3) A method for supporting the walls of buildings during alterations, e.g. for inserting a door or window, comprises forming a plurality of apertures a in the wall, inserting into each aperture a clamping device B temporarily to support the upper portion of the wall, clamping rails D<SP>2</SP> on each side of the wall removing a length of wall intermediate the clamping devices and inserting a permanent lintel C, pinning up the space between the lintel and the upper portion of the wall, removing the clamping devices and making up the apertures. The clamping device is an inverted T- member b<SP>1</SP> supporting a top plate b<SP>2</SP> and located in position by flanges b<SP>4</SP> on a pair of clamps B<SP>1</SP>. Wedges are driven between the top plate and the upper side of the aperture a if necessary. The top plate supports angle irons D<SP>1</SP> which carry bolts d<SP>2</SP> for securing in position the rails D<SP>2</SP> which provide additional support for the upper portion of the wall. The rails D<SP>2</SP> may be joined as shown, by battens D<SP>3</SP> extending through holes a<SP>1</SP> in the wall. If the wall carries an eccentric load rods D<SP>4</SP> are bolted between bars d<SP>4</SP> passing through apertures a<SP>2</SP> and the angle irons D<SP>1</SP>.
