Abstract

828,200. Electrodeposition of bright metal coatings. DEHYDAG DEUTSCHE HYDRIERWERKE G.m.b.H. Jan. 18, 1956 [Jan. 19, 1955], No. 1670/56. Addition to 762,257. Class 41. Bright metal coatings are electrodeposited by a modification of the process of parent Specification, in which instead of the organic sulphonic acid brightening additive thereof there is employed a water-soluble compound which contains no sulphonic acid groups or metal atoms but contains at least two carbon atoms each of which is linked exclusively with three heteroatoms each selected from oxygen, sulphur, and nitrogen, said carbon atoms being joined together through one of their hetero-atoms by a short chain divalent hydrocarbon residue which may be substituted and/or interrupted by oxygen, sulphur, or nitrogen atoms or groups derived therefrom, and at least one of said hetero-atoms on each of the carbon atoms being a sulphur atom which either is bound to the carbon atom by a double bond or is in turn linked to said divalent residue. Typical additives contain two or more radicals from thioureas or isothioureas, thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, xanthogenates, and trithiocarbamates. The baths may also contain organic sulphonic acids or salts thereof in which the hydrocarbon radical is substituted by a halogen atom or by a cyano or thiocyano group, and in addition a polyhydroxy alcohol and/or a polymerization product of a low molecular weight unsaturated carboxylic acid or salt thereof. The invention is applicable to bright plating with brass, bronze, copper, nickel, zinc, silver, and cadmium, typically from baths at 70‹ C. Iron sheets plated with cyanide copper may receive a bright copper deposit from sulphate baths. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 787,186.
