Classes 123(2) and 123(3) [Also in Group XII] A water tube steam boiler comprises four similar upright cyclone furnaces 1 communicating with a centrifugal slag separator 9a forming the lower part of the radiation space through flared outlets 20 or around impact plates 21 by way of secondary combustion chambers 5 in which incombustible particles entrained by the gases are cooled to solid form. The water tubes lining the combustion chambers 1, outlets 20 or impact plates 21 and secondary combustion chambers 5 as well as the separator 9a are protected by refractory material. The upper radiation space 24 connected to the separator 9a by a cylindrical sleeve 23 with a flared top depending into the separator has unprotected water tube walls. Vertical tube platens 25a, spaced apart across the upper end of section 24 form part of superheater and dampen the whirl of the gases passing to the convection space 31, which contains a further superheater section 26.
