Abstract
Graft polymers are made by polymerizing in a liquid medium from 95 to 5% by weight of a monomer mixture (1) containing from 30 to 100% by weight of vinyl and/or vinylidene chloride and from 70 to 0% by weight of a different monomethylenically unsaturated polymerizable compound containing a -CH=C< group with from 5 to 95% by weight of a polymer formed by the polymerization of a monomer composition (2) containing from 1 to 100% by weight of a monomer represented by the formul <FORM:0824263/IV (a)/1> and <FORM:0824263/IV (a)/2> and <FORM:0824263/IV (a)/3> wherein R and R1 represent H or a C1-C6 alkyl group and R2 represents a C1-C4 alkyl group, and from 99 to 0% by weight of a different, monoethylenically unsaturated compound containing a -CH=C< group, and which has or has not been isolated from its polymerization medium, the percentages of monomer being based on the total weight of compositions (1) and (2). The liquid polymerization medium may be water, which may contain emulsifiers, mixtures of water with acetone, ethanol, dioxane or acetonitrile and solvents such as benzene, toluene, heptane, acetonitrile, acetone and aliphatic ethers. Polymerization may be accelerated by heat, light and catalysts such as peroxy compounds (listed) azines and ketazines; also present may be specified mercaptans and alkali metal bisulphites. Polymerization may be carried out batchwise or continuously and, if desired, in two stages whereby further chloride monomer is polymerized in the presence of a graft polymer formed previously. The polymers are compatible with polyvinyl and polyvinylidene chlorides and may be dissolved in acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone and polyacrylonitrile solvents from which solutions, films and fibres may be made. Specification 651,155 is referred to.
