Abstract

823,684. Counting apparatus. BIRD, W. G. Oct. 20, 1955 [July 20, 1954], No. 21174/54. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] Voltage pulses alternately positive and negative in sign and of amplitude substantially independent of pulse rate are applied in push-pull to the grids of two thyratrons 60 so that each pulse causes one of them to fire and discharge its anode capacitor 63 or 64 into a much larger capacitor 62 in the common cathode circuit, the leakage current of which through the field windings 69 of D.C. motors 70 is a measure of pulse rate and is integrated by mechanical counters 72 driven by the motors 70, which counters therefore effectively count the applied pulses. The arrangement is described as applied to the integration of fluid velocity to give a measure of fluid flow, the pulses being produced by differentiation of a square waveform produced by a member 35 oscillating in the flowing fluid ; meters 68 provide a measure of the fluid velocity. The desired proportionality between the field current of the motors 70 and the angular velocity of the armature produced is ensured by the use of eddy-current brakes 71 producing a braking torque proportional to angular velocity; two meters 68 and counters 72 are shown connected in series as a illustration of the provision of flow rate and integrated flow repeaters.
