Abstract
A metal deactivator composition, suitable for use in the stabilization of organic substances against oxidative deterioration catalyzed by metallic oxidation promoters, comprises the product of condensation of an ortho-hydroxy aromatic aldehyde with an alkylene polyamine dissolved in a mixture of an alcohol and an aromatic hydrocarbon, the mixture containing 5-35% by weight of alcohol. Organic substances which may thus be stabilized are hydrocarbon oils such as motor fuels, lubricating oils, diesel oils and fuel oils, and fatty materials such as fats and fatty oils of animal or vegetable origin. Metals which catalyse oxidation include copper, iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium and lead. Ortho-hydroxy aromatic aldehydes mentioned are salicylaldehyde, o-vanillin, substituted 2-hydroxy benzaldehydes (i.e. the 6-methyl, 3- or 4-methoxy, and 4- or 6-hydroxy derivatives), 2 - hydroxy - naphthaldehyde - 1, 1 - hydroxy - naphthaldehyde-2, and anthrol-2-aldehyde-1. Alkylene polyamines specified are ethylene or propylene diamine, diethylene or dipropylene triamine, 1,2- or 2,3-diaminobutane, 1,3-diaminopropane and triethylene tetramine. The alcohol may be a C1-C8 alkanol while the aromatic hydrocarbon may be benzene, toluene or xylene. Gum inhibitors, such as phenols, amines, aminophenols and wood tar oil fractions, may be added to the composition, specific gum inhibitors being N,N1-di-sec.-butyl-p-phenylene diamine or a mixture of N-butyl-p-amino phenol and N,N1-dibutyl-p-phenylene diamine. In examples, metal deactivator compositions consist of (i) disalicylal-propylenediamine or disalicylal-1,3-diaminobutane dissolved in a mixture of toluene and methanol and (i) disalicylal-propylenediamine dissolved in a mixture of benzene and sec.-butanol. The toluene-methanol solution of disalicylal-propylenediamine is used to stabilize thermally-cracked gasoline (containing N,N1-di-sec.-butyl-p-phenylene diamine) or lard against copper-catalysed oxidative deterioration.ALSO:A metal deactivator composition, suitable for use in the stabilization of organic substances against oxidative deterioration catalyzed by metallic oxidation promoters, comprises the product of condensation of an ortho-hydroxy aromatic aldehyde with an alkylene polyamine dissolved in a mixture of an alcohol and an aromatic hydrocarbon, the mixture containing 5-35% by weight of alcohol.
