Improvements in or relating to the production of synthetic resin-filled paper

Abstract

820,236. Paper containing synthetic resins. HODGKINSON & CO. Ltd., W. S. March 28, 1958 [April 2, 1957], No. 10741/57. Class 96. In the production of synthetic-resin-filled paper suitable for decorative and wear-resistant laminates, a substantially water-insoluble melamine monomer is added, e.g. in powder form to the pulp suspension from which the paper is formed with a smooth, close surface which is printed upon, and the paper is then treated with formaldehyde or hexamethylene tetramine to form a partially condensed resin. The paper may then be dried with heat in a ventilated drier, and then hot-pressed on to a background during which operation the resin curing is completed. The formaldehyde may be applied e.g. as a vapour, or the hexamethylene tetramine may be sprayed on as a solution, or alternatively, paraformaldehyde may be added to the paper pulp. The melamine may constitute 25% to 50% of the paper; and heat-resistant pigments and/or dyes may be included. An example mentions also oxidized starch and aluminium sulphate.
