Abstract
816,843. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Oct. 10, 1957 [Oct. 10, 1956], No. 30925/56. Class 83 (4). A television camera adjacent an arc welding head facilitates remote control of the head by an operator. In, say, gas-shielded arc welding the arc itself serves as a source of light but in flux-submerged arc welding additional illumination is provided. In a machine for welding from the inside, the longitudinal seam of a pipe 5, the welding head 7 is carried on a boom 1 vertically adjustable on a stand 2 carrying wire reels 16. The boom also carries the television camera 3 and a lamp 12, a pointer 11, a flux hopper 8 and pick-up pipe 9. The pipe 5 is mounted on rollers on a carriage 10. During welding the operator views a screen 14 on a control desk 13 and controls movement of the carriage 10 and also of the rollers to correctly position the pipe 5. The welding head 7 is supported within the pipe 5 on rollers 6 and is pivotally connected to the boom 1. In a modification, the workpiece remains stationary and the welding-head and television camera are moved.
