Abstract

811,317. Floor cleaning or polishing machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 26, 1956 [Oct. 26, 1955], No. 30660/55. Class 138(1). In rotary floor cleaning or polishing apparatus having at least one rotatable brush 1 mounted thereon and arranged to be driven by an electric motor, the or each brush is mounted by a spring- loaded ball coupling device and is adapted for angular movement of the brush relative to its mounting, while at the same time serving detachably to retain the brush on the apparatus. The coupling may be formed by having spring- loaded steel balls 7 abutting into holes in a shank 9 and into a brush boss 3 at holes 6, of which only two are needed but four are preferred. The brush 1 may be attached to the shank 9 by screws 5 in flanges 4 of the boss 3. A flange 11 on the shank 9 overhangs the boss 3. Instead of a square mounting hole in the boss 3 for the square-sectioned portion of shank 9, Fig. 1, which retains the balls 7, the sides of the mounting hole may be curved as shown in Fig. 3. The brush 1 has bristles 2 sufficiently stiff to remain substantially undistorted, or distorted symmetrically with respect to the centre of rotation of the brush during operation. The bristles could be a base for a polishing pad attached to the base 12 of the shank. According to the Provisional Specification the floor-alignment of the brush(es) may be effected by using a spring metal mounting for the or each brush boss, or separately from.detachment means by using a spring metal spider attachment between the boss flange and brush.
