Abstract

803,282. Electric control systems. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 26, 1956 [Oct. 4, 1955], No. 28291/55. Class 40 (1). A device for indicating rate-of-change of altitude comprises means 2 for sensing a change of altitude, an inductive signal generator including an armature 6 moved by the sensing means 2 and a movable winding 12 which develops an output signal on relative movement between said armature 6 and said winding, a variable-speed electric motor 18 responsive to said signal and mechanically coupled to the winding to move the latter to a new equilibrium position with respect to the armature 6, and an indicator 26 displaced by said motor 18 to indicate the rate-of-change of altitude. Windings 10 are supplied with alternating current. When the E-shaped core is in neutral position with the armature 6 the currents induced in oppositely wound coils 12 are equal and antiphase so that the resultant output applied to amplifier 14 is zero. When the armature 6 is moved the windings 12 produce an alternating signal corresponding in phase to the sense of movement of the armature. This signal is amplified and applied to the control winding 16 of a two-phase induction motor 18 to drive it in one or other direction in a sense to drive the E-shaped core to a new neutral position. The motor 18 also drives an indicator 26 through a magnetic coupling 22, 24 of the drag-cup or eddy current type, whereby the rate of change of altitude in a positive or negative sense is indicated.
