Abstract

801,103. Gas producers ; discharging molten residues. KOHLENSCHEIDUNGS-G.m.b.H. Dec. 3, 1955, No. 34688/55. Addition to 800,812. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). In a gas producer &c. in which the discharge of molten material is in accordance with the parent Specification, a gas connection is made between the pressure chamber and the space above the molten material in the producer. As shown, the pressure in the producer 1, Fig. 1, and the pressure chamber 3 is equalized by a connection 6 so that molten residues continuously leave through an outlet 2 and fall into a water bath 4 from whence they are discharged as granules through an opening 5 by mechanical or hydraulic means. Gasefying medium is supplied to nozzles 28 through pipes 8 and steam evolved in the chamber 3 passes to the producer through connection 6. A pipe 12 replenishes the bath 4 when necessary. The pressure in chamber 3 is kept constant as the chamber is so constructed that the volume of water bath in it provides a difference of 600-800 mm. water column between the bath water levels within and outside the chamber. In lieu of water, molten slag may be used as the intermediary for pressure maintenance. In another producer, the connection 6, Fig. 2, has a valve 13, and a valved connection is made between the chamber 3 and a pipe 8 so that some gasefying medium passes to the producer through pipe 7, chamber 3 and pipe 6. Throttling by valve 13 increases the chamber pressure and simultaneously reduces or interrupts the discharge through outlet 2. In a further producer, gasification is accompanied by melting of residue and iron ore the molten iron 12a, Fig. 3, settling under the molten slag 11 and whilst the latter passes to the chamber 3 the former flows through a channel 2a into a pressure chamber 3a. Chamber 3 is water sealed whilst chamber 3a is sealed by molten iron 4a. Both chambers are connected to the producer by pipes 6, 7, and each pipe 7 carries a small amount of blast which produces in the associated chamber an excess pressure to prevent gases from flowing from the producer to the chamber. The iron 4a passes to pig-casting machines whilst the granulated slag is water-swept to an outlet 36 from which it falls into a further water stream for conveyance to a tank. In yet another producer, a piston 15, Fig. 4, automatically controls pressure equalization in chamber and producer in the following manner. When the producer pressure increases the pressure within a space 18 increases to move the piston to open a valve 21 to allow blast to flow via a pipe 7 to the chamber 3. Consequential pressure increase in chamber 3 is transmitted to a space 17 and the piston is returned to its initial position. When the producer pressure decreases the piston moves to the right to open a valve 20 which allows the excess pressure in the chamber 3 to escape to atmosphere until the pressures in spaces 17, 18 are once again equal. The producer is also used to smelt ore, all the liquid materials flowing into the chamber 3 from which the molten iron is discharged through an outlet 42 whilst the molten slag is poured through a spout 44 into casting moulds on a conveyer belt 45. A similar belt may be provided to receive the iron from the outlet 42 and the slag leaving the spout 44 may be removed by water in a manner similar to that disclosed in Fig. 3.
