Apparatus for top charging horizontal coke ovens comprises a carriage 20 on which is mounted a vertical Flapman type conveyer 32 receiving preheated coal through a shoot 64 fed from a series of hoppers 26 one in front of each oven chamber, and a horizontal Flapman-type conveyer 31 extending over the battery, being fed by said vertical conveyer and discharging through telescopic shoots 59 engaging oven chamber openings 24. The horizontal conveyer system is supported by standards 41 on the carriage 20 and runs on a pair of wheels 43 on a rail 45 on top of the battery, so that it moves as a unit with said carriage. The conveyers 31, 32 each comprise endless conduits with an internal chain of links 46 connecting discs 47. The vertical conveyer is driven by a motor 49 and discharges into the lower run 38 of the horizontal conveyer which is driven by a motor 51. Each discharge point has a branch conduit 40 provided with a screw conveyer 57 driven by a motor 58, Fig. 5. A spillage trough 61 mounted on the pusher side bench supports 62 is fed by a spillage shoot 60 and provided with Flapman-type conveyers 63 collecting the coal and feeding the bunkers 26 at one end of the battery. Also mounted on the carriage is a leveller bar 23 driven from a motor 51 by a rope drive 56, and a pusher ram 22 driven by a motor 53 through gearing 54.
