Abstract

801,053. Photographic processes. AGFA A. G. Feb. 7, 1956 [Feb. 7, 1955], No. 3828/56. Class 98(2) An exposed silver halide emulsion layer containing an organic developing substance is heated in contact with a transfer layer containing a compound which splits off sulphur at a temperature of 80-150‹C. and then separated to leave a positive image in the transfer layer. Advantageously one or both of the layers contains a hygroscopic substance or a compound with water of crystallization, and the transfer layer contains a heavy metal salt or an amine to increase the depth of the positive image, which is constituted by a sulphur dye. The emulsion may be of silver chloride, bromide or iodide or mixed halide and may be of any sensitivity, gradation, or silver content. Numerous developing substances for use therein are quoted, and numerous colloids and other materials for the transfer layer are quoted also. Heating may be effected by a hot press or drying drum, preferably at 110-135‹C. but may be at 90‹C. Twelve examples furnish full quantitative details for production of the two layers except for details concerning the initial silver halide emulsion, thus in Example 1 10 g. of 4 - aminophenol hydrochloride, 100 g. of sodium acetate and 150 cc. of water are added to 1 litre of any desired silver halide emulsion, which may contain other emulsion additives, and this is cast on paper or other support and dried; and for the transfer layer 20g. of sodium sulphide dissolved in 500 cc.. water and made up with 10 per cent polyvinyl alcohol solution to 1000 cc. are cast similarly. After exposure the two layers are heated for 10 to 60 seconds by means of a glazing press or two flat irons to give a reddish-brown image in the transfer layer. Heavy metal salts quoted in the examples are Reinecke salt [Cr(NH 3 ) 2 (SCN 4 ] . NH 4 . H 2 O, ferric chloride and copper sulphate in examples 2, 10 and 12 respectively. Specification 655,273 [Group IV(b)] is referred to.
