Abstract

794,433. Spike extractors. SKYHI, Ltd., and STEAD, A. H. April 6, 1956 [April 6, 1955], No. 10060/55. Class 61. An extractor for elastic spikes from railway sleepers comprises an hydraulic cylinder 9, a ram 12 arranged to be drawn within the cylinder on establishing a difference of pressure within the cylinder, a plate 26 hinged to the end of the ram and adapted to engage the spike 7 and a strut 14 connected to the cylinder and adapted to bear against the ground or other suitable fixed point during the process of extraction. The plate 26 has projections 27, 28 on one face which fit under and around the curved top of the spike 7. The strut 14 is hinged to the body of the extractor to allow it to be swung out of the way to one side during engagement of the plate 26 with the spike. The ram has a piston head slidable in the cylinder 9. An oil reservoir 10 is arranged on top of the cylinder and a pump 11 is mounted on the cylinder 9 whereby fluid is pumped from the reservoir to the cylinder through a tube down the side of the cylinder to draw the ram into the cylinder. A spring bearing on the head of the piston pushes the ram downwards in the absence of opposing pressure.
