Abstract

790,128. Twisting and finishing yarns. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. April 20. 1956 [April 22, 1955], No. 11725/55. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) A "voluminous" doubled yarn which itself may be doubled with other yarn(s) of the same or different character is produced by oppositely false-twisting two running yarns, setting the deformations imparted thereby and doubling the yarn after the false-twist has left them. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, two yarns 35, which may consist of continuous filaments of a polyamide, polyester, or polyamino acid, are supplied to feed rollers 17, 21, and pass around the roller 17, one yarn engaging with each of notches 25, 26, in a guide wire 24, thence via guides 28, 29, 30, and through a steam tube 12 (entry and exit nipples 15 and 14 being provided for the yarns) wherein the yarns are subjected to the setting action of moist steam at atmospheric pressure, to adjacently-mounted false-twist "spindles" 6 driven in opposite directions by a common belt 7; yarns drawn from the spindles 6 (at a lower speed than fed thereto) pass through separate guides 31 and are combined in their passage once around the roller 18, through the nip between the driven roller 18 and the roller 22 and in engagement with the back guide 27; the composite yarn 36 is taken-up on a package 33 at a linear speed slightly less than the peripheral speed of the rollers 18, 22. The yarn may be wetted, as by passage through a water bath, before entering the heating zone and may be subjected to dry heat therein, as by passage through an electrically-heated, insulated, vertical tube in which the windings of the heating element are more closely spaced towards the ends than in the middle in order to provide a uniform temperature distribution. In order to impart to the yarn travelling through the false-twisters sharp changes of direction, each spindle 6 is provided with a wire guide 8 in the form of an inverted U the limbs 9 of which are formed with indentations 11 in two or more of which each yarn is engaged so that it passes across the spindle three or more times. Alternative constructions, Figs. 3 and 4, comprise wire hooks 37 or a wide guide 38 having a single indentation 39 on each side of the spindle axis and an additional indentation 41 in a cross-piece 42.
