Abstract
A powder containing over 97 per cent of calcium carbonate, together with magnesium carbonate, suitable for use as a filler for paints, plastics or rubber is obtained by cleaning, substantially drying and pulverizing egg-shells. In an example the egg-shells are passed from a hopper into a horizontal steam-heated worm conveyer in which they are treated with caustic soda to remove proteinaceous materials and the mixture is then discharged into a centrifuge to separate the egg-shells. The caustic soda is recycled and the egg-shells are washed with hot water in a further horizontal worm conveyer and passed to a second centrifuge where the water is separated. They are then passed to a feed hopper for a mill in which they are crushed. In an alternative procedure the shells are placed in hot water containing bleaching and deodorizing agents in a washing machine having a pulsator or agitator. They are removed, centrifuged and tumbled in a hot air drier at 230 DEG F. whereby they are also broken up, and finally milled to e.g. 120 mesh (British standard). The product is also said to be useful for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, medical and horticultural purposes.ALSO:Calcium carbonate obtained from egg-shells by cleaning, drying and pulverising is stated to be useful for water softening.
