Abstract

789,287. Clutch discs. SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE DU FERODO. July 6, 1956 [July 6, 1955], No. 21094/56. Class 80 (2). In a clutch disc comprising friction linings on both sides of circumferentially-spaced wings extending radially from or coupled to a hub member, some or all of the linings have radial or inclined slots 27, Fig. 2, coincident with furrows 28 in the wings. The slots 27 may extend across the whole width of the linings and the furrows 28 extend for a short distance below the linings. Alternatively, the slots may extend only part way from the outer periphery of the lining and taper off. Successive wings and linings may differ in arcuate lengths. As shown in Figs. 7, 10, the wings 10, 12 and linings 11, 13 are of equal lengths, the linings 11 having the slots 27 and being of a calcined material of high wear resistance but low frictional qualities, e.g. of copper, lead, tin and graphite, and may be fluted, while the linings 13 have no slots and are of an asbestos-based material of low wear resistance but high frictional qualities, e.g. of asbestos with rubber or a phenolic resin with copper or brass reinforcement. The linings 11 are secured directly to the wings 10, while the linings 13 and wings 12 have interposed resilient means 13a, and, in the disengaged condition of the clutch, the linings 13 protrude beyond the linings 11 so as to be engaged first.
