Abstract

787,686. Travelling wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 29, 1955 [Aug. 4, 1954], No. 21995/55. Class 39(1). In a travelling wave tube with two or more helices 1, 2, Fig. 1, successively traversed by the beam and arranged to be at different D.C. potentials the helices are surrounded by an insulating tube 3 or insulating rods, Fig. 4 (not shown) coated with lossy material 16 which does not touch any of the helices, D.C. connection to at least one helix being made by means of the lossy material 16. The lossy material is preferably such as to cause the selective suppression of undesired modes as described in Specification 660,793. The inside part of the dielectric tube 3 which may be of glass or ceramic material is coated with strips of lossy material 15, 15a along internal ribs thereof so that the tube can function in the manner set out in Specification 771,189. The upper helix 2 is connected via L-shaped probe 2, choke sleeves 8, a wire lead and a clip 17 to the lossy coating 16. and thence via clip 18 and lead 19 passing through hollow post 13 to a base pin at the gun end of the tube. The lower helix 1 is connected via L-shaped probe 10 choke sleeve 7 posts 13 and choke sleeve 6 to a second base pin at the gun end. There are two groups of three metal posts 13, 14 joining the inner choke sleeve members 8, 9, 6, 7 together. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the helices are supported between three dielectric rods which carry arcuate strip coatings of loss material. D.C. helix potentials may be applied to the lossy strips in common or different D.C. potentials to different strips connected to different helices.
