Abstract

786,083. Treatment of growing plants. FISONS PEST CONTROL, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1956 [Feb. 23, 1955 ; June 17, 1955], Nos. 5453/55 and 17475/55. Class 6(2). A device for use in applying plant-treating substances to woody plants comprises a container to be attached to the exterior of the wood of the plant with its open end adjacent the wood, thereby allowing the substance contained therein to be absorbed by the wood. According to one embodiment of the invention (see Fig. 1), the device may comprise a cup 3 having a sharpened rim to penetrate the wood 2 and supported on the plant by a spike 1 embedded in the wood and passing through a hole in the cup. A feed hole 6 is provided in the cup for the purpose of introducing the plant-treating substance thereinto. Instead of being separate from the cup, the spike may be integral therewith and may be in the form of a wood screw in which case a finger grip similar to those of wing nuts is provided on the exterior of the cup. In a further embodiment of the invention, Fig. 6, the spike is provided with a wide head 14 in the form of a perforated disc, the cup 15 being joined to the rim of the disc and the sharpened rim of the cup extending beyond the disc towards the tip of the spike. In this case, the substance passes through the holes in the disc to come in contact with the wood. Instead of being integral with the cup, the disc may be formed with a threaded rim cooperating with a screw thread on the inside of the cup. Further, the cup may be attached to the plant so that the plant-treating substance drains towards the wood under the action of gravity, in which case the rim of the cup is preferably cut on the slant. According to the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 9 the spike is hollow and is in communication with the interior of the cup 29, the plant-treating substance passing to the wood via holes 33 in the spike. In yet another embodiment, Fig. 10, a container 39 is fitted over the head of the hollow spike 34, the plant-treating substance entering the spike via holes 38 in the spike and passing to the wood via holes 37.
