Abstract

785,966. Automatic circuit-breakers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. March 9, 1956 [March 14, 1955], No. 7432/56. Class 38 (5). In a circuit-breaker having a current carrying loop of which the movable contact forms part, the magnetic flux due to current in said loop produces a force opposing closing movement of the contact member, which force is reduced by a flux produced by a rigid conductive non- magnetic member in inductive relation to the loop. The invention is described as applied to a circuit-breaker having a closing and tripping mechanism similar to that described in Specification 682,564. The loop comprises terminal conductors 27, 43 and the movable contact member 35, a bar 165 of copper being arranged within the loop. It is stated that this bar causes the flux of the loop to lag 15 degrees behind the current.
