Abstract

784,014. Viewfinders. SOC. D'OPTIQUE ET DE MECANIQUE DE HAUTE PRECISION. Aug. 2, 1955 [Oct. 12, 1954], No. 22138/55. Class 98(1) A viewfinder for a photographic camera or the like has a reflecting surface in the path of the light rays passing through the camera lens, the surface being smaller than the cross-sectional area of the light path so that part of the light is directed towards an optical system which produces a final real image of the reflecting surface near the pupil of the eye of the user. As shown in Fig. 1 a lens system comprising elements 4, 5, and 6 is mounted in housing 1, together with an iris diaphragm 7. Prisms 10, 11 are mounted between the elements 5 and 6. A small reflecting surface 9 is formed on the face of the prism 10 which is cemented by Canada balsam to the prism 11. A portion of the light issuing from the elements 4, 5 falls on reflecting surface 9 and is reflected again at the surface of the prism 11 and emerges through an aperture 14 in the objective housing. The light then enters a view finder housing 16, which is connected to the objective mount 1 by a dovetail join 15. A roof prism 17 in the view finder housing re-inverts the image and deflects the light beam until it is again parallel with the optical axis of the objective. A lens 21 before the prism 17, and a collector lens 22 after the prism, cause a real image of the scene observed through the objective to be formed. This image is observed by mans of an eyepiece lens 26. A masking frame 23 is placed at the focal plane of the lens 26, so as to limit the field of view of the camera. In a modification, the iris diaphragm 7 is arranged behind the reflecting surface 9.
