783,230. Carbonating beverages. FIZZMASTER CORPORATION. Nov. 7, 1955 [Nov. 8, 1954], No. 31815/55. Class 14 (1). Relates to apparatus for carbonating a liquid in a bottle which can subsequently be removed and the carbonated liquid dispensed by pouring. According to the invention the bottle 12 is placed in a container having upper and lower parts 13, 11 which can be telescoped and held together by means of cam ledges 16 and rollers 14, a rubber stopper 20 for the bottle being provided which supports a holder 25, 27 for a cartridge 36 of compressed gas and the stopper 20 also carrying a perforated needle 23 and a conduit 29 through both of which the gas flows from the cartridge into the bottle. The neck of the cartridge 36 is thrust through a self-sealing rubber gasket 25 and is supported in the upright position over the needle 23 by a barrel portion 27 and at the upper end by an inverted cup 18 guided by a bolt 40 extending through a hole in the top of the container part 13. The cup is urged downwardly by a spring 17. In operation the rollers 14 on the upper part 13 of the container are engaged with the cam ledger 16 on the lower part 11 which is then turned, causing telescoping of the two parts until the spring 17 is sufficiently stressed to cause the needle 23 to pierce the cartridge 36. An additional hollow resilient stopper 50 secured to the conduit 29 engages in the neck of the bottle and is perforated to allow excess gas to escape but is so designed to prevent foam from passing through the perforations.
