Abstract
782,372. Treating exhaust; indicating working conditions. RUSTON & HORNSBY, Ltd. Dec. 12, 1955 [Dec. 11, 1954], No. 35915/54. Class 7(2) The rate of water injection into an engine exhaust system is increased with increase in the exhaust gas temperture by a thermo-responsive device 19 preferably located downstream of the point 22 at which water is sprayed into the system and which by increased pressure communicated through a capillary 21 closes a valve 17 in a shunt 18 across a water supply line comprising a ring main 13, 23 incorporating a filter 14, pump 15 and relief valve 16 and fed from a tank 11, If the device 19 fails the injection rate is set at its maximum or other safe value, e.g. if there is normally always sub-atmospheric pressure in the capillary 21, failure thereof .would fully close the valve 17. An excessive rise in exhaust gas temperature due to failure of the water injection system operates a further thermo-responsive device 24 to cut off or reduce the engine fuel supply. There may be a spring-loaded non-return valve in the connection 27 between the ring main and the spray point.
