Abstract
<PICT:0776983/IV(b)/1> A process of dyeing textile fibres, such as wool and rayon, in a closed liquid circulation system under static pressure at temperatures of at least 100 DEG C. consists in introducing superheated water into the system from a heated tank 35, causing this water to circulate through the fibres placed in an autoclave 1, and finally adding the dye through a funnel 16 in an expansion vessel 13. The dyes used may be vat dyes in a non-reduced state with caustic soda and hydrosulphite, or vat dyes in a leuco state, or substantive, sulphur, naphthol, acid or acetate dyes. In detail, the apparatus comprises a closed circulation system having an autoclave 1, a sampler 26, which may be closed off from the system by valves 29, 30, an expansion vessel 13 connected via valve 19 and pipe 18 to a source of compressed gas, a heat exchanger 10, a pump 4, a valve 5 for reversing the circulating flow, and a water-tank 35 provided with a heater 36. In operation, all valves communicating with the atmosphere except the vent 2 are closed. Valve 34 is then opened gradually, so that the liquid circulates and the pump 4 is started, the valve 2 being closed as soon as liquid escapes from it. An air cushion is maintained in the vessel 13 to provide a static pressure, and steam may be passed through the heat-exchanger 10 to raise the temperature of the liquid. When all the dyestuff is to be added quickly to the bath, valve 23 is opened and valve 24 shut. If dyestuff is to be added at a pre-determined rate, valve 23 is closed and valve 24 opened, so that dye enters through the regulator 25. Compressed gas may be allowed to enter the vessel 13 through the valve 19 to prevent cooling of the liquid, the pressure reaching nearly two atmospheres. When the operation has been concluded the bath may be cooled by passing cold water through the exchanger 10. In a modification the dyestuff may be pumped or injected into the system at a definite rate. A second expansion vessel may be provided in the system to prevent the setting up of overpressures and the vessel 13 may be made large enough to act as a container for heating the bath.
