Abstract

A styrene polymer or copolymer in which pentane is soluble (butadiene-styrene copolymer specified) is blended with 1-10 per cent pentane and 2-3 per cent water and extruded at at least 250 DEG F. and a pressure less than 150 lb. per sq. inch. The pentane may be dissolved in the monomer mix which is then polymerized. A small amount, e.g. 0.1-0.5 per cent of a wetting agent may also be present. Specified wetting agents are soaps, long chain alkyl sulphates, alkaryl sulphonates, polyalkoxy alkylene ethers, amine salts and quaternary ammonium compounds. The blending may be carried out in rotary blenders or tumbling apparatus and the extrusion through slotted dies in continuous screw-extruders. The foamed material may be used as insulating material and in packaging.
