Abstract

A method of spray coating articles whose vertical dimensions are greater than the maximum vertical dimension of an expanding spray of finely divided particles of liquid coating material projected outwardly from a central vertical axis in a generally horizontal direction is characterized in moving the articles through the expanding spray along a helical path the axis of the helical path being generally coincident with the axis of the expanding spray. As shown in Fig. 5, the articles are suspended from an endless conveyer travelling on a helical track 56b so that <PICT:0772141/III/1> at the highest point the bottoms of the articles are level with an electrostatic spraying disc 51 and at the lowest point the tops are level therewith. The articles are rotated as they travel through the spray. The disc is rotated and maintained at a high potential, the articles are grounded. To coat articles of various lengths the height of the disc may be varied or a pivoting disc may be used or suspensions of different lengths. The articles are led to the helical track by a track 56a and and led from it by a track 56c, the tracks being suspended from supports 59. The pitch of the helical track may be varied by securing the ends to supports 60, 61, pivoted to a centrally pivoted lever which is suspended by a cable operated by a drum and crank 65 to alter the inclination of the lever.
