[Also in Groups XX and XL (a)] In apparatus for recording by a xerographic process (see Group XX) an optically projected image of numerals and like symbols formed on the fluorescent screen of a cathode-ray tube in response to teleprinter-type signals comprising character and synchronizing pulses, the recording surface carried by a drum which is continuously rotated by an electric motor and to record successive groups of symbols in straight lines perpendicular to the direction of movement of the recording surface, the electron beam forming successive symbols is electrically deflected both vertically and horizontally to counteract the vertical displacement of the previously recorded symbol due to the drum movement. To maintain the drum in step with the rate at which symbols are presented, the synchronizing pulse and a pulse generated by a tachometer driven by the drum are fed to a pulse totalizer and the D.C. error signal after amplification is applied to a magnetic slipping clutch coupling the motor to the drum. In a modification, the delay introduced by the error signal is eliminated by feeding additionally from the totalizer in a loop circuit to a parallel pair of pulse generators, one of which is operated by negative error signals while the other is operated by positive error signals, their outputs being combined before being fed to the amplifier. In another arrangement, the motor is a twophase motor and its shaft is directly coupled to the drum, the amplified error signal causing simultaneous alteration of the motor speed by being applied to one winding of the motor and the vertical deflection of the image of the symbol on the cathode-ray tube screen. If a directly coupled motor is used and the amplified error signal is applied only to the cathode-ray tube, the symbols are recorded in line, but the interline spacing varies with fluctuations in motor speed.
