Abstract

Derivatives of aliphatic sulphonic acids or their salts are obtained by reacting together a compound which contains a reactive hydrogen atom or a reactive replaceable metal atom or an atom convertible to a higher state of valency and which can be alkylated and a cyclic anhydride of an organic sulphonic acid (a sultone), if necessary in the presence of acid-neutralizing means, the reaction being carried out in the presence of water or an aqueous organic solvent. As sultones there may be used 1,3-propane sultone, 1,4-butanesultone, isobutane sultone, tolylsultone, and 1,8-naphthsultone. The other reactant may comprise hydroxy, carboxy, amino, imino, amido, imide or mercapto compounds of inorganic, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic nature or salts thereof, thiol-acids, dithio-acids, xanthogenic acids, dithiocarbamic acids, trithiocarbamic acids, trithiocarbonic acids and sulphinic acids, tetiary amines, thio-ethers and phosphines. Examples disclose the preparation of the sodium salt of 2,4,6-trichlorophenoxypropaneo -sulphonic acid, sodium phenylthiopropane-o -sulphonate, the disodium salt of thiocarbonylbis-thiopropane-o -sulphonic acid, sodium N,N-diethylthiocarbamic acid - propyl - ester - o - sulphonate, the sulphobetaine of isothiourea-S-propane-o -sulphonic acid, the sulphobetaine of isothiourea - S - butane - o - sulphonic acid, sodium mercaptobenzthiazole-S-propane-o -sulphonate, the betaine of pyridine-N-propane-o -sulphonic acid, 3-chloropropane-1-sulphonic acid, the sodium salt of piperazine-N,n1-bisdithiocarbonic acid - n - propylester - o - sulphonic acid, and the sodium salt of N,N-diethanoldithiocarbamic acid n-propyl ester sulphonic acid.
