Abstract

1 : 1 : 3 - Tributoxy - 2 - halopropane is obtained by the action of hypohalous acid on acrolein to give a -halo-b -hydroxypropionaldehyde, which is steam-distilled to form a -haloacrolein, followed by treating this product with a acrolein, followed by treating this product with a primary or secondary butanol in presence of an acid catalyst, the former used also as a water-entrainer. Examples of the process using hypochlorous acid and normal and isobutanol are given and the products, mainly 1 : 1 : 3-tributoxy-2-chloropropanes, contain some 1 : 1-and 1 : 2-dibutoxy-2-chloro-prop-2-ene. The 1 : 1 : 3 - tributoxy - 2 - halopropanes may be dehydrohalogenated to 1 : 1 : 3-tributoxyprop2-enes. These react with amidine compounds to give 2-substituted pyrimidines, e.g. with guanidine to give 2-aminopyrimidine.
