763,318. Centrifugal separators. MAYEUX, J. M. Nov. 4, 1954, No. 31975/54, Class 23 A separator convertible to a clarifier is provided with a stack of plane discs. The stack comprises discs 6, distance pieces 9, end plates 7, 10, and clamping bolts 8, apertures 7a in the plate 7 being aligned with slots 6b in the discs and apertures 10a being provided in the plate 10 for the discharge of the lighter liquid. Stacks designed for the treatment of different liquids may be interchanged. During use as a separator the liquid passes through radial passages 5 in the distributer 4 then upwardly through the slots 6b in the stack, the lighter liquid passing through the apertures 10a to discharge into a receiver 28, and the heavier liquid passing through nozzles 14 then over a regulating disc 18 to a receiver 29. Heavier solids are deposited on the wall of the bowl 1 and lighter solids are retained in the chamber 15 formed between the stack and the distributer. The chamber 15 may be provided with means for evacuating air. For the separation of certain liquids plugs may be fitted in the apertures 7a so that the liquid enters the periphery of the stack. During use as a clarifier plugs are inserted in the nozzles and in the apertures 7a, the clarified liquid being collected in the receiver 28. The cones forming the receivers have resilient rings 21, 22 which prevent air or vapour circulation.
